🚨 What Happens When You Receive a Red Tag from Enbridge or a Licensed Gas Technician?

Red Tag Warnings can be issued by gas utility providers such as Enbridge or Licensed Gas Fitter Technicians upon inspecting an unsafe gas appliance that no longer safe to operate due to the chance of Carbon Monoxide Leaks or CO. These warnings are designed to ensure the health & safety of the residents in residential & commercial properties. These warnings come in 2 types depending on the severity of the issue. Type A and Type B.

🔴 Red Tag Type A vs. Red Tag Type B

Type A Red Tag (Immediate Hazard)
A Type A red tag is issued when a gas appliance poses an immediate danger. In this case:

The technician is required to notify the gas utility immediately
The gas supply to the appliance—or entire property—may be shut off right away
The appliance must not be used until the issue is resolved

Type B Red Tag (Non-Immediate Hazard)
A Type B red tag indicates a safety concern that does not require immediate shutdown. However:

You are given a limited timeframe (typically up to 30–42 days) to complete the required repairs
If the issue is not resolved within the deadline, the gas utility may shut off your gas supply
Repairs must meet current natural gas codes and safety standards

⚠️ Important: Compliance is Required

In both cases, the property owner must:

Complete the necessary repairs or replacement
Provide proof of correction by a licensed gas technician
Ensure all work complies with current gas safety codes

Failure to comply may result in gas disconnection and additional costs.

🔧 What to Do If You Receive a Type A Red Tag

If you receive a Type A red tag, you have two main options:

1. Repair the Appliance
Hire a licensed gas technician to inspect and repair the issue. It’s important that your HVAC contractor carefully follows the recommendations outlined in the red tag notice and complies with all safety codes.

2. Replace the Appliance
If the unit is beyond repair or not cost-effective to fix, replacing it with a new, code-compliant system may be the best solution.

Once the work is completed, your HVAC contractor can perform the necessary testing and submit documentation for red tag clearance.

🔧 What to Do If You Receive a Type B Red Tag

Type B red tags are commonly issued due to:

Improper installation (e.g., venting issues, incorrect configurations)
Outdated systems that no longer meet current code requirements

For example, a furnace installed years ago may no longer comply with today’s updated safety standards.

You will have a specified timeframe (typically 30–42 days) to correct the issue before it escalates. Prompt action ensures continued gas service and avoids unnecessary disruptions.

⚠️ Why Are Natural Gas Leaks Dangerous?

1. Risk of Fire or Explosion
Natural gas is highly flammable. Even a small leak can ignite if it comes into contact with a spark, flame, or electrical source, potentially causing a serious fire or explosion.

2. Health Hazards (Carbon Monoxide Exposure)
Gas leaks can lead to the buildup of carbon monoxide (CO), a colorless and odorless gas that can cause symptoms like dizziness, nausea, and in severe cases, can be life-threatening.

⚠️ 3 Signs of a Cracked Heat Exchanger

A damaged heat exchanger is a serious safety risk. Watch for these warning signs:

Unusual smells coming from your furnace or vents
Visible rust or corrosion on furnace components
Flame turning yellow instead of blue

If you notice any of these, contact a licensed gas technician immediately.

🛑 Carbon Monoxide Safety in Ontario

Since 2017, homeowners must install carbon monoxide detectors:

Near bedrooms
Near furnace/boiler rooms

Test regularly and change batteries every 6 months.
